Family Life Edu. (VA)

FLE

For the 2020-21 school year, Family Life Education (FLE) in LCPS has adjusted the lessons to focus only on non-sensitive Standards of Learning (SOL). These adjusted lessons for the 2020-2021 school year will emphasize non-sensitive FLE SOL’s that are rooted in social-emotional learning (SEL), the LCPS Profile of a Graduate and other important concepts as bulleted in sections below.

Although the FLE curriculum is compatible with existing curricula and serves to enrich the educational experiences of the students in the Loudoun County Public Schools, certain objectives in this year’s Family Life Education curriculum may still be considered sensitive by some parents / guardians. To assist parents / guardians in making informed decisions about whether to optout their child from FLE instruction, the information provided on this webpage is offered to help facilitate this process.

In response to the requirements of Section 22.1-207.1 of the Code of Virginia, Loudoun County Public Schools has implemented a comprehensive, sequential, abstinence-based, age-appropriate Family Life Education curriculum grades 4-10.

The Loudoun County Family Life Education (FLE) curriculum is designed to:

  • Emphasize the importance of family
  • Stress the need for individuals to make decisions appropriate to values established within their families
  • Assist students of all ages in accepting the responsibilities for and consequences of their behavior
  • Encourage child-parent discussion to foster mutual support between the home and the school
  • Stress the value of life and the multiplicity of opportunities available to young people.

Since Family Life Education (FLE) distance learning lessons in LCPS have been adjusted to focus only on nonsensitive Standards of Learning (SOL) during this 2020-21 school year, the FLE Parent Handbook has been made accessible to parents / guardians in ParentVUE (PVUE). To utilize the materials provided for parents / guardians to discuss the more sensitive subject-matter with their child as they see fit, please do the following:

  • Go to the ParentVUE (PVUE) log-in webpage.
  • Log into ParentVUE (PVUE).
  • Click on the “Additional Information” tab in the PVUE menu.
  • Click on the Family Life Education link, which will redirect you to a PVUE Google Drive.
    • Folders contained within this Google Drive are entitled:
      • Elementary
      • Middle
      • High School
  • Click on the grade level that applies to your student(s).
    • Subfolders will be contained within the grade level folder for each grade.
    • An overview of the FLE Specialist-led lessons and activities, and an FLE Parent Handbook are included in each folder.

  • Log into ParentVUE (PVUE), select your student, click "Student Info" then "Edit Info"
  • Scroll down to the section titled "Student Notifications and Permissions"
  • Under "Allow Participation in Family Life Education,"
    • Change the status to say "no" if you do not want your student to participate in FLE.
  • Then, scroll to the bottom of the page and click "save changes."
  • This will update the system - thank you!
